Choosing and ShapingYour Bonsai Tree

One of the most important features of your Bonsai tree is the shape in which you choose for it. It is up to you to decide on what shape your Bonsai should have. Keep in mind that some trees will only do one or two kinds and will limit your options. There are six common shapes to choose from.

Formal Upright

This is great for beginner Bonsai planters. It allows them to create the look of an ancient forest tree and does not require as much practice as many of the other shapes do. You can use this on trees with trunks that are short or tall. It is a straight shape that leaves the top standing tall over the roots and trunk.

Informal Upright

This is similar to the upright except that it adds some curved to the trunk. The top of the tree is still standing tall and straight over the base of the trunk. However, the unusual shape of the trunk makes it look more unique.

Slanting

This shape is a design in which the tree top is angled differently. It may be leaning slightly or quite a bit over the trunk and the roots. This is a harder shape to do.

Cascade

This shape is used when the more dominant tree branch or the trunk is level with the rim of the pot. There are different degrees to this look - which range on how well you are able to accomplish the look. Some are more drastic and others are subtle.

Elongated

This shape is used on formal and informal trees - but with the lowest branch pushing past the normal length it should be at and that falls lower than the rim of the pot. This is best used when it has large roots that are exposed.

Weeping

This shape is very popular and rather easy for people to do. It is more commonly seen on willow trees but can also be used on hemlock, wisteria, and lace leaf maple trees.
